The euro suffered the influence

After yesterday’s ECB President comments suggesting that the economic recovery in the region will be a hard process, the euro fell versus a number of main traded currencies, and headed to complete the second week of losses versus the dollar.
The euro suffered the influence of European Central Bank Jean-Claude Trichet’s declaration yesterday affirming that interest rates are not set for hikes in the short-mid-term and that the recovery in the countries using the European common currency will be, using his words, “bumpy”, decreasing attractiveness for the euro which is losing for a fourth week in a row against the Swiss franc. Trichet as long as other members of the ECB commission board are due to speak today in Frankfurt, increasing speculations that yesterday’s dovish tone may be reconfirmed today, decreasing attractiveness for the euro which lost today also versus the pound, after seAfter slashing most of its previous 2 months gains this week, the Brazilian continued further a rally that started yesterday, today fueled by forecasts that indicate a less significant contraction for seven of the most important world economies.
After today’s positive perform in Chinese stocks and forecasts indicating that the world economy recovery may happen faster, the Brazilian real climbed further from yesterday, paring most of its losses from the past week, when it reached the lowest level in almost a month.
USD/BRL traded at 1.8734 as of 10:41 GMT from an opening rate of 1.8885.

Yesterday’s statements were more negative than what traders expected, according to analysts. Some improved economic data was expected to be interpreted with significant optimism by the ECB board, but a rather cautious position affirming that interest rates won’t be raised so soon decreased attractiveness for the European common currency today.
EUR/USD traded at 1.4283 as of 7:11 GMT after touching 1.4355 yesterday. EUR/CHF traded at 1.5140, trading at a rather neutral level from yesterday but losing on the weekly comparison.

Nepali peace process

Recently envoys of various countries including those representing the permanent five in the UN Security Council called for strict implementation of the Nepali peace process at a time when UNMIN’s continuation has once again become a hot topic in Kathmandu’s diplomatic circle.

Certainly the UML leadership is not in a position to give favorable support to the continuity of UNMIN, and based on this writer’s inner sources, given UNMIN’s recently purported biased favor shown to the Maoists in their rather unruly democratic ways, UML is not in a position to see UNMIN bless the Nepali peace process any further. But if one is to believe Prachanda, who has recently come back from Singapore with the blessings of Nepali Congress boss and the “voice that matters” Mr. Girija Prasad Koirala, the peace process will be concluded with a Maoist government in Singha Darbar very soon and hopefully UNMIN will stay.

Nepal’s foreign Heads of Mission might not fully agree on UNMIN’s recent report presented to the Security Council and the UN Secretary General, but they do they see the letter and spirit of the Comprehensive Peace Accord (CPA) an absolute must if the political parties are to truly rededicate themselves to the original commitments of the 12 point agreement, and hence to the Nepali people on whom true governance is vested. The final judgment will definitely rest on UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, who is all too aware of the recent Nepali government allegations of the UNMIN staff showing favoritism to the Maoists in Kathmandu, which the Maoists themselves have accepted as a non-biased political blessing.

All of this has left Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal as Prime Minister, significantly strained to rule from Singha Darbar, in fact, having to assume the role of a shadow Foreign Minister to try to balance the different ‘foreign’ forces that are pro- and anti-Maoist in the current leftist power struggle in Nepal. The truth is: Girija Babu might only offer his blessings to Prachanda if Miss Sujata Koirala is promised something better than the current portfolio she holds, namely Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Foreign Minister.

However, Mr. Nepal’s close advisers are wary of giving NC a stronger power berth, since the current coalition is already proving a stateless one, neither representing those who won the election, nor the ones who truly wished to govern Nepal (which the Maoists claim their legal right). Add to it, voices who were anti-Maoist such as Mr. Sher Bahadur Deuba, who have suddenly gone quiet. So too with other politicians who supported a stronger G-8 support in the peace process, translated as the extension of UNMIN. India and China’s final say in the UN Security Council and that of the US which has shown its frustrations in the past in the lack of true democratic progress in the Nepali peace process in the absence of a constitution building process, will certainly weigh in on UNMIN’s term renewal or else, final winding up act. Thus, Mr. Madhav Kumar Nepal is trying to clinch a last minute show stealer; he sees the continuity of UML for the moment, but cannot guarantee his rivals’ wishes, such as Mr. Jhala Nath Khanal within the same UML senior leadership fold, but who see a Maoist inclusion in the current power sharing agreement a must for the peace process to continue.

The portending reality is: Girija Babu will neither bestow his full blessings on the current Maoist street protests, nor will he endorse a full NC collaboration with UML, except where it comes to passing the essential budget. Mr. Ram Baran Yadav’s role as President thus remains assured constitutionally with Mr.Koirala’s continued backing, and it is likely that the Maoists will eventually lessen their demands for a total confrontation solely based on the President’s ‘unconstitutional’ decision taken to retain former Chief Rookmangud Katawal of the Nepal Army. However, the Maoists do have larger power sharing demands which both UML and NC will have to meet before the end of 2009. The Maoists are not in a position to go back to the jungle, but also feel discomfort in being sidelined from the current decision structure, after Prachanda’s principled resignation from the PM’s position in openly defying President Yadav‘s ‘ unconstitutional move’. In the end, if Nepali leaders have realized at all, these cataclysmic events have only succeeded in eroding the national economy, leading to inflation, lessened economic growth opportunities, increased corruption and more to depress already deteriorating Nepali living standards. It has even threatened the recently booming tourism figures which saw a significant 10 percent growth this year.

What of the future? Nepali leaders must now learn to play the coalition game on their own, if as Mr. Nepal vouches, there will no more foreign funds available to shape Nepali political reconciliation. Edmund Burke the quintessential political philosopher once wrote, people can never give up their liberties but under some delusion. In Nepal, it has been the delusionary leaders who have kept on fooling the Nepali people in the name of political justice, viz. democracy and economic growth. It is high time, they learnt the truth of Nepali politics in a democratic context: nothing seems permanent in Nepal’s political culture and neither the current leadership berth.

Many in Nepal’s diplomatic community are bound to believe in the present context that those who can make you believe absurdities can also make you commit atrocities. One cannot disagree with the foreign envoys that there is a clear lack of will to address conflict-era human rights abuses and unwillingness to tackle the continuing state of impunity in Nepal. It is true as the envoys note that …” the Constituent Assembly has fallen behind schedule and that there is so far no agreement on the future structure and governance of Nepal." This is short of stating that while Nepal is not a failed state, it is a stateless state with no visible signs of national governance, excepting the flagged ministers’ limos that roll out of the Minister’s quarters in Pulchowk every day on their way to Singha Darbar. Nothing is being achieved when it comes to concluding the Nepali peace process, forget its logical end. Sometimes I wonder what our friends in UN in Pulchowk are contemplating seeing this increasing statelessness and lack of development governance?

This all leaves a big question too on whether UNMIN needs a further mandate to bring about the much desired Nepali peace, hopefully to be guided by a practical timeline with a beehive of activities planned based on earlier obligations. One should note the joint statement, which comes from Nepal’s best friends: Australia, Denmark, European Commission, Finland, France, Germany, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, UK and USA. Coincidentally, it came at a time to mark the third anniversary of the signing of the CPA which went virtually unnoticed. The foreign envoys’ press note suggests, "A failure to agree on a vision for the future and to draft the constitution on time will be a clear disregard of the expectations and aspirations of Nepal's citizens, and will set back the country's economic and social development." Voltaire once said to succeed in the world is not enough to be stupid, you must also be well mannered. At least for Nepal’s political leaders if they are truly seeking peace beyond a Himalayan mirage, they have learn to be well mannered and work as a team to bring about this much desired transformation. UNMIN, in turn, must reciprocate with its kindest gestures by stationing the best and brightest of its global peace team in Kathmandu so that the Nepali peace process is achieved swiftly and hopefully by the end of 2009.

Bhote Koshi River Rafting

Meet at the office as per time arranged by your expedition leader at the pre-departure meeting. Then we travel by our private bus to the river starting point of the trip. This is a spectacular drive through villages and if weather permits, you will have fantastic mountain views i.e. Ganesh Himal, Langtang etc. Upon arrival in the camp lunch will be served. After early lunch your expedition leader will deliver a safety talk and provide all paddling gear for the trip. First day rafting provides about three and half hour of pure white water. After a long series of class 3 rapids we drop into the first class 4 drop known as Gerbil In The Plumbing. From here there is a stretch of class 3 whitewater and then we come to the crux of the day, which is a long, technical rapid called 'Frog in a Blender'. After this rapid we settle down for about twenty feet, and then it’s back into the soup with a long series of class 3+/4- drops which lead us into a nifty little rapid called Carnal Knowledge of a Deviant Nature. The remaining ten kilometers of river is a non-stop series of class 3 and 4 drops terminating into short pools with the next drop just a few feet away. The river flows through a beautiful narrow canyon with lush green vegetation and waterfalls coming in from the steep stone walls. At the bottom of this stretch is a rapid called ExLax. Just before we hit the village of Barabise we load all the boats onto our bus and drive back to our camp, change your wet clothes, enjoy the scenery and late evening have dinner and camp. hot drinks, rum punch, enjoy the scenery an

Day 02:
Early morning, have hot drinks and breakfast then pack your gears. You have the second chance to show how your raft team can work well together in challenging rapids. We have lunch on the river and continue the action until the take out point. We run the top stretch again in the morning, though most people don’t recognize it the second time through. Today instead of getting out at Barabise we continue on down through the center of town and onto a short flat stretch. Upon reaching the dam, the entire gradient of the last kilometer fulminates into fifty meters of incredibly steep and technical rapid known as 'The Great Wall'. 'The Great Wall’s one redeeming feature is that there is a pool at the bottom, because right after the pool is an incredible rapid called 'Liquid Bliss', which leads directly into a rapid called 'Fake Right Go Left', which leads directly into another rapid called 'My God, What To Do?'. The trip ends with a bang on a long series of drops known as 'Dazed and Confused'. Without a doubt this is some of the finest whitewater rafting to be had anywhere. Our trip ends by mid-noon. Religion & Culture

Nepal-a country with a long historic tradition is an amalgamation of a number of medieval principalities. Before the campaign of national integration launched by King Prithvi Narayan Shah the Kathmandu Valley was ruled by the Malla Kings, whose contributions to art and culture are indeed great and unique. In 1768 AD the Shah dynasty ascended the throne of the unified kingdom. His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, is tenth King in the Shah dynasty.

The new democratic constitution of the kingdom was promulgated on November 9, 1990. Nepal is one of the founder members of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation SAARC of which the third summit was held in Kathmandu in November 1987.

People

Nepal has a population of more than 18 million people made of different races living in different regions, with diverse culture, languages and dialects.

The Gurungs and Magars live mainly in the west. The Rais, Limbus and Sunuwars inhabits the slopes and valleys of the Eastern mid hills. The Sherpas live in the Himalayan region. The Newars constitute an important ethnic group of the capital valley Kathmandu.

There are Tharus, Yadavas, Satar, Rajvanshis and Dhimals in the Terai region. The Brahmans, Chhetris and Thakuris are spread generally over all parts of the Kingdom.

Hinduism and Buddhism constitute two major religions of Nepal. A remarkable feature of Nepal is the religious homogeneity what exists, particularly between the Hindu and Buddhist Communities. Apart from the Hindus and Buddhists, Muslim from the third largest religious group. The exquisite medieval Art & Architecture of the Kathmandu Valley vividly reflect the artistic ingenuity and the religious tradition of the people.

Language

Nepali, serves the purpose of the kingdom's lingua franca in Nepal. The educated people speak and understand English as well.

Climate

Annapurna Base Camp trek gives you the opportunity to get up close to the giant Annapurna mountains as well as the holy mountain Machhapuchre. You will get the opportunity to spend the night at both base camps. The huge south face of Annapurna (8,090m/26,535ft) provides an impressive backdrop, while the closeness of 10 peaks over 6,000m/20,000ft, including Hiunchuli, Fang, Annapurna III and Machapuchare (the Fish Tail Peak), inspire a delicious joy as a fitting highlight of this spectacular trek. On the return journey we will have a chance to visit the beautiful village and the Gurung 'capital' of Gandruk before heading back to Pokhara.

Itinerary

Day 03 : Kathmandu - Pokhara by comfortable tourist bus (200 km / 6 hr. driving)
The road to Pokhara snakes along one of the most famous rafting river of Nepal known as trishuli. You can make your day more exciting by adding up three hour's rafting trip to your itinerary. Pokhara is called natural capital of Nepal. Tourist hotels and restaurants are situated by a 4.43 sq km lake with crystal clear peaks of Annapurna, Fishtail and Lamjung Himal.
Day 04 : Pokhara – Drive to New Bridge (Birethati / 41 km / 1 hrs 30 minutes) and trek to Tirkhedunga : On this first day of trekking, we will walk only for 4 hrs through charming villages, terraces and mountain streams. The day is easy with few short ascends and mostly plane walk.
Day 05 : Trek to Ghodepani (2,750m / 5 hr). It si mostly uphill. At first you will climb flights of stone made steps for 2 hrs and then enter the lush forest. After the climb you will see Annapurna South. The climb then gets more gradual and the walk will be more pleasent. Ghorepai is situated right on the top of the pass. Hence one can see spectacular view of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna Massif.
Day 06 : Poon Hill and trek to Tadapani: We will leave hotel before sunrise for poon hill. After almost an hour's climb we will arrive at the altitude of 3190m at poon hill. From here Annapurna appears more beautiful. You will find yourself surrounded by gigantic peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Massifs (Annapurna I, 8091m / Dhaulagiri I, 8,167m). After spending ample of time in Poon Hill, we climb down to the lodge and do our breakfast. Trek to Tadapani through Rhododendron forests with two short climbs and rest downhill. Tadapani offers closer view of Annapurna South, Huinchuli and Fishtail.
Day 07 : Trek to Chhomrong village (2,180m / 5 hrs): From Tadapani we climb down a long section to Kymrong River and then climb for 20 minutes to the other side. Rest is plain walk to Chhomrong. From chhomrong Valley of Annapurna Sanctuary is visible with closer view of Annapurna South, huinchuli and Fishtail.
Day 08 : Trek to Bamboo (2,335m / 5 hrs): We climb down to the chhomrong River and climb up to Sinwan (two hours climb). We enter the Annapurna Sanctuary here. Then a plane walk along the lower flank of Huinchuli for 1 hr and downhill for another 1 hour will take us to the small settlement of Bamboo with 4 lodges.
Day 09 : Trek to Deurali (3,200m / 5 hrs): Trek from here becomes more interesting in the deep gorge with lush vegetation of bamboo and rhododendron. This is paradise for bird watchers. Except the climb from Himalaya to Deurali, the trail is fairly plain.
Day 10 : Deurali to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700m / 3 hrs): From here the valley widens up and the vegetation thins up. One can even feel thin air climbing to Machhapuchhre Base camp. You can even go all the way to Annapurna Base Camp if you feel fit.
Day 11: Trek early morning to Annapurna Base camp and trek down to Himalaya or Dovan. (6 -7 hrs).
Day 12: Trek back to Chhomrong (6 – 7 hrs)
Day 13: Trek to Ghandruk (1,900m / 5 hrs)
Day 14: Trek down to nayapul and drive back to Pokhara
Day 15: Spend morning in pokhara and fly back to Kathmandu
Day 16: Kathmandu free day
Day 17: Drive to the airport and fly back

Nepali women are paddling!

The results of this project blows my own mind away. Less than a year after we came up with the idea of starting Himalayan River Girls we have fourteen Nepali ladies active in the club. Four of the girls that started learning kayaking in the spring are now employed with a rafting company and are supporting themselves as trainee river guides. One of them has reached her dream to be the first woman to win the Himalayan Whitewater Challenge.

Altogether ten girls took part in the five week long Nepali women´s river guide training that we organised this fall season and 21 female kayakers from all over our planet came to do a river trip with us. And the best news: Five of Nepal´s most prominent rafting companies have come forward to let us know they would like to employ these ladies.

The training program

The river guide training organized by the Himalayan River Guide Association was a five week long program specifically designed for Nepali women to provide them with a good base of basic river guide skills to confidently take employment with a rafting company. 10 women took part in the program that contained kayaking and raft guide training as well as W.R.T. first aid, leadership, communications skills, cooking and setting camp for big groups on the riverside.

The Sun Kosi river trip

Part of the training program was a 10 day river trip together with 21 female western kayakers who not only brought a lot of equipment over for the club. They inspired, encouraged and taught the Nepali girls kayaking along the way. At the end of the long journey we all went together to show "girl power" at the 3-day long Himalayan Whitewater Challenge. Whitewater Challenge 2008

The competition on the Trisuli river this year was different than any year before with more than 30 female compeditors!

3 Nepali girls entered in the kayak competition and Susmitas dream finally came true, to become the first Nepali woman to win the Challenge and got a brand new Jackson kayak! Sita (in the picture) also did very well and came second. All new Himalayan River Girls entered in the raft race as the first ever full Nepali female raft team seen anywhere!


The Club

Thanks to our sponsors we now have sixteen!!! kayaks and a lot of other gear for kayak training. With this gear the girls will now be able to practise kayaking any time, do river trips and get more girls into the scene.

The spring season is about to start, and it will be very exciting to be back in Nepal in February with new energy, ideas and visions for the club. Together with the Himalayan River Guide Association I will plan for future trainings, and start dreaming / planning for international kayak trips / competitions.
